Liz James is an out lesbian health equity and human rights advocate. She currently serves as a Member of the Oregon Statewide LGBTQ Aging Coalition and as a volunteer leader with AARP’s Southern Oregon Community Action Team. During her tenure as CEO of the Lesbian Health Initiative, a Houston-based nonprofit, she developed and delivered LGBT Cultural Competency 101 – Tools to Improve Patient Communication, Care and Outcomes, a multi-discipline CEU training course for healthcare students and professionals.

Carey Jean Sojka, PhD, is an Assistant Professor of Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies at Southern Oregon University. Her research and teaching interests include transgender studies, embodiment, gender, sexuality, race, disability, and fat studies. She also conducts community trainings on transgender, lesbian, gay, bisexual, and queer issues in our region.
Kylan Mattias de Vries, PhD, holds a joint appointment as Associate Professor in Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies and the Sociology and Anthropology programs at Southern Oregon University. His scholarly interests include inequalities, intersectionality, transgender studies, critical race studies, and social psychology.

Dr. Murphy also holds a faculty appointment at Oregon Health and Science University as Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine and serves as the Medical Director for the Oregon AIDS Education & Training Center.

Ruth Christiansen, PA-C, enjoys serving patients of all stages and walks of life, and appreciates being able to share her ideas and expertise with others to help them in their journey to lead healthier and happier lives. She is passionate about preventive medicine, evidence based medicine, and patient education.

Jess Guerriero, MA, MSW, assists folks with identifying affirming care providers within and outside of OHSU. They also provide accompaniment to visits throughout the OHSU system, including having a presence at Richmond Family Medicine. Jess also is highly involved with patients seeking care from Pediatric Endocrinology and pursuing phalloplasty. Jess uses they/them pronouns.
Amy Penkin, MSW, LCSW, joined OHSU in January 2015 as the Program Coordinator for the newly launched Transgender Health Program. Amy has a history of providing and overseeing care for the LGBTQ community and is dedicated to promoting health equity for these and other underserved populations experiencing health disparities.
